The accumulation of technical and architectural debt is the biggest obstacle to sustainable development for agile teams. When work items are only picked based on business value it is hard to invest time into a proper architectural foundation and code hygiene. Architecture and well written code only have indirect business value. Of course the lack of those two important ingredients will expose itself over time with exponentially growing cost of change which is caused by growing amounts of technical and architectural debt. Sustainable development is only possible if you have a strategy to measure and manage technical debt.

Participants can expect answers to the following questions and issues:

  • What exactly is technical debt and how can it be measured
  • Why different categories of technical debt have very different impact on project outcomes
  • How to develop a proper rule set to deal with technical debt aligned with strategic goals
  • How to a mange technical debt – sometimes it is smart to accumulate debt, as long as you know how to pay it down later
  • practical considerations like tools and development infrastructure
